27th March 2013 what a difference a year makes

Hi All
What a difference a year makes here are a few photos taken this morning on the Rye bridge in Leixlip.
Last year on the 24th March we had the Paddy's day comp in blistering 20 degree temperatures which lasted more than a week this morning just over a year later the contrast is stark.

Paddy's Day Comp 2013

Hi All
The St Patricks day comp was held today and there was a fine turn out on such a drizzly morning, however the whether forecasters got it wrong again as the day cleared up nicely to provide lovely fishing conditions. There was a good spill of rain over night which added a nice tinge of colour to the water & rose the level about 4 inches from mid week levels, water temps were still quite low for this time of year only 4 degrees.
Nymphs were the order of the day with 28 fish caught, only a couple fell for dry flies the rest nymphs.
Different techniques were used New Zealand, Czech, French, upstream & downstream with New Zealand proving the best on the day with both Michael Callaghan & new member Kevin Tipper both using variants  of that style to good effect jointly winning the competition with a 13 inch fish each.
They agreed to share the trophy 6 months each for the year well done lads.
All enjoyed the fry up before hand many thanks to all the cooks the bacon sandwiches were much appreciated.
Here are some pictures taken during the day.

1st March 2013

Hi All
The first of March has been and gone thank God its a new season, hope you all over wintered well now its time to get back in the river and burn off a few pounds wading.
There were a good few lads out on the 1st  Michael Callaghan, Gordan King, Garreth John, Martin Murray & Jason and Kerri Nolan were all out for the new season all caught a few fish and went home happy.
The water temp was a bitter 5 degrees a major change from last year which saw almost hot tub temps in the river at this time of year, temps of 10 degrees were recorded throughout the river last year on the 1st March.
Very little fly life was seen with only a few March Browns and a couple of olives seen hatching.
Pheasant tail Nymphs proved the order of the day with the resident trout happy to gobble them up.
Here are a few pic taken on the day to wet your appetite.
