The Last Chance

Hi All
The last chance was fished on lough Owel as usual it was a tough day when experience shone through  to win the day. Jimmy Carroll took the honers see pic below of the presentation at the AGM, well done Jimmy a fine trout.

The Sedge

Hi all
Sorry for the delay in info flow lately a few computing issues at this end the only consolation is you didn't miss much, the last few weeks of the season this year have been the worst most can remember with river levels at record lows, fish hiding/in distress and prolific weed growth due to water conditions all round there hasn't been much to shout about, even so we kept plugging away with our competitions. The Sedge was fished in miserable wet windy conditions and was very hard going with most anglers struggling to rise a fish let alone hook one, it was won with a last ditch attempt at the pool below the bridge in Leixlip proberly the only spot on the river that evening that the weather was not a factor. It was won in the end by Jason Nolan with 2 fish for 17 inches, second was Kevin Tipper with one fish for 12 inches & third was Paul Hegarty. Heres to hoping next years event will be ran in better conditions.

The Green Peter

Hi all
Sorry for the delay in info flow lately a few computing issues at this end the only consolation is you didn't miss much, the last few weeks of the season this year have been the worst most can remember with river levels at record lows, fish hiding/in distress and prolific weed growth due to water conditions all round there hasn't been much to shout about, even so we kept plugging away with our competitions. The Green Peter was fished on Lough Owel and was a hard slog with only 2 fish caught  and not much more risen, the highlight of the day being Donals BBQ at the end. The competition was won in the end by Jimmy Carroll with Declan Shannon second well done lads on such a tough day.

A Poem for the Rye by Mattie Cunningham

Don’t turn your back on the Rye

We have a friend and from her source to her end,
She’s more classy than Itchen or Tweed.
She’s friendly and warm and bustles along, past hedges and bridges and reed.
She’s lovely and dear, but these past years she’s shed tears,
When her anglers just cast her aside,
Now she’s had some work done to her face and her bum,
So fish her, and restore her pride.
In the summer she’s low and her bones start to show,
And her lush reeds get burnt to a stalk.
But somewhere in there, the trout still have their lairs,
For you know they can’t get out and walk.
Don’t  go drive,n  for miles you’ll just end up with piles,
Instead just go down where you’re wanted.
it’s for her daughters and sons that she’s had the work done,
So fish her, and just let her flaunt it!
She’s proud of her trout, she won’t just give them out,
She’ll make you work hard for your thrill.
But when she gives up a trout don’t, take him out,
For they’re far too precious to kill.
So if during the season, so you don’t lose your reason,
You need to go casting a fly,
With a few hours to spend, go see an old friend
and don’t turn your back on the Rye.

Trout League Round 5

Hi All
The Trout League Round 5 was fished on the 5th July 2014, not quite the weather we had for the Intel Trophy but hey you can't win them all. A good turn out and a good few fish caught with Aidan Crean won this leg of the league with a fine trout of 19 inches from the Rye I'm sure you'll agree a lump.
Kevin McLaughlin was second with another fine fish of 15 inches, a good nights fishing by any standards. Remember if you want to go on the Blackwater trip please contact Aidan Crean ASAP.
The Green Peter is to be fished on the 26th July meet at Jack Doolins always a bit of crack with a BBQ after, if your going and need a boat please contact Mattie Cunningham.

Intel Trophy 2014

Hi All
A good turn out as usual for the Intel Trophy and an absolutely beautiful evening was granted by the gods of fishing  with a fabulous sedge hatch from 9pm on wards, can't ask for better really. In fact the sedge hatch got so intense on some sections of the river some anglers sugested a dust mask would have come in handy. The competition was accumulative length as usual and was won by Kevin Tipper with and overall length of 135 inches a fine total well done Kevin. Jason Nolan was 2nd with a total of 117.5 inches & Dermott Mitchell was 3rd with a total of 43 inches. The biggest single fish also fell to Kevin Tipper 2no fish at 15 inches. Apologies to Colm Corrigan  who we've been wrongly calling Horrigan for some reason this year its been rectified now thankfully, notably he had one of his best evenings on the Rye & best league placing with 31.5 inches for 5th place, narrowly pipped for 4th by Alan Clarke with 35 inches for his best place to date also. Another apology as not one photo was taken on the night by anyone, with everyone to busy enjoying the beautiful weather & sedge hatch we all got a bit carried away.
Anyhow the next competition is League Night 5 on Saturday the 5th July Meet at 7:30pm intel football pitches fishing till 11pm. However please note as per anglers discussion about the end time after this comp last year & subsequent comity discussion on the matter, the end time may be extended to 12pm if conditions require it which will be decided on the night.
Hope to see you all there & if someone could ask the fishing gods for the same conditions as the Intel Trophy it would be much appreciated.

Leixlip Festival Competition

Hi All
The Festival competition fished very well with a lot of fish caught over measurable length. a good night was had by all with the Liffey low for a change (whats seldom is wonderful). The best fish caught on the night was a 17" Trout caught by Brian Coffey, 3 anglers had a 15" fish to secure them second place and a series of fish below that in the low teens made up the top six. Most notable was joint 3rd place with a 14" trout was Paul Hegearty who has shown much improved form over the last few competitions well done Paul keep up the hard work its paying off.
A great turn out for this competition as always heres a few anglers who were left at the end for a picture see below.

Jr Competition

Hi All
The Jr competition was fished on Sunday 26th April all the usual suspects turned out for the days action which turned out to be good as all caught fish. The weather was also well behaved in comparison to the gale which was blowing last year this was much appreciated. The competition was won by Connor Callaghan with a lovely 12 inch trout caught on a Hawthorn Fly.
Well done Connor and all who fished on the day, also thanks to the seniors who left the river to them on the day it was much appreciated. Heres a few photos below taken on the day.

The Hawthorn Cup

Hi All
The Hawthorn Cup was fished Sunday the 13th April and as predicted in the post below the conditions were just about perfect. Large quanties of smolt & par were caught which bodes well for the future.
A good turnout a day when most anglers caught something even if it was endless par. Some anglers however had a red letter day with 3 anglers catching over 100" total length each, Dermott Mitchell was third with a handsome 105", Kevin Tipper who also had the largest single fish of the day (15 1/2")  was second with a whopping 122", but the winner on the day with a tape measure busting 161" was Jason Nolan. The river was in prime condition for nymph fishing with very few rising fish, although when the competition was over a few trout began to rise isn't it always the way. cheek out the photos below. In other news a rare sighting was seen on the Rye this week Iorn Blue Duns a fly not seen for many a year, no doubt there are some of these old favourites rattling around everyones fly box might be time they got wet on the Rye again.
P.S. Apologies to Kevin wrong picture see the correct one below.

Paddys Day Comp

Hi
All the Paddy's day comp was fished on the 16th of March this year, the weather was fine and the river had dropped a little from the 1st day of the season which made water conditions quite good on the day. There was the usual good turn out nothing like sausage & rasher sambos to tempt fishermen out of their winter slumber. Most caught fish and all went home happy. Kevin Tipper won with a 14 inch trout with Gianluca hot on his heals with a 13 inch fish in second. Well done lads. Heres a few pics taken on the day to wet your appetite before the Hawthorn Cup.

1st of March

Hi All
The first of March has been and gone and the Leixlip anglers were treated to a lovely sunny day with water levels at a low enough level to be able to wade it, albeit rather slowly.
All the usual suspects were out and all enjoyed their days fishing with most catching a fish or 2 all went home happy.
The river was both higher & colder than normal for this time of year measuring 600mm at the measuring stick at the distillery bridge and being only 6 degrees it was a stark contrast from last year when it was 400mm and 10 degrees, we can't win all the time.
In other news our Trout League Champion Kevin Tipper finally got his hands on his trophy last night when it was presented to him by our Chairman Aidan Crean.
Photos below tight lines see you all on the river soon.

2014 Calendar 11 days to go

Hi All
Only 11 sleeps until the start of the new season waahoooo! hope you all got some nice shiny new fishing equipment off santa and can't wait to try it out on the river.
The 2014 calendar is now posted just to wet your appetite, we had a fine year last year with some amazing fish being caught at some crazy hours of the day/night, 2013 will certainly go down as the driest hottest summer anyone can remember on the Rye with water levels at a constant low, quite the contrast since November as its been in flood since then hopefully it will have dropped before the first of March.
A WORD OF WARNING the fisheries board & Intel have carried out some improvement works between the big rock and the small farmers bridge at the back of intel this stretch was quite shallow  and fast flowing holding very few fish it now has deep holes some to 2 mtrs so caution is needed in this stretch until you are familiar with the changes.
