The Last Chance

Hi All
Well as you may have guessed the Last Chance Comp was not fished, due to weather conditions & bad timing there was no opportunity to hold the competition, this was very disappointing as we were denied a last day title decider shoot out between 4 anglers for the League title a pity as in all the years the league has run it has never gone down to a last day shoot out. Although our streak of different winners of all competitions this year was maintained which doesn't happen often. So with that said congratulations to all our competition winners this year Eduard Dondea, Jason Nolan, Aidan Crean, Kevin McLaughlin, Noel Fitzpatrick, Roy Sanderson and Chris Haynes also congrats to our league winner Jason Nolan.
The AGM is set for Thursday the 23rd November 2017 in St Mary's GAA starting at 8:30pm.
The Pike Competition will be the following Sunday 26th November in Carton House fishing starts at 10am, lunch @ 1pm finish @3pm, €5 entry fee, club members only and single barbless hook applies.
hope to see you all at the AGM & Pike Comp this weekend.

The Clonanav Cup

Hi All
The delayed running of the Clonanav Cup was held on Saturday the 9th September and is our final update before the last competition this weekend the aptly named "Last Chance".
Well back to the cup there was a brisk north westerly breeze to start which may have put some anglers off attending, however the evening improved as it wore on. Daddy long legs proved effective for our winner on the night Chris Haynes who had the biggest & most fish for a clean sweep on a difficult evening, even though Chris had sent us in some specular pictures of beautiful trout he regularly catches on the Rye over the years, he has never won one of the competitions so I'm sure you will all join me in congratulating him on his maiden win, well done Chris and good call with the daddy's. With Chris winning this comp it has maintained the trend this year that every completion has been won by a different person now that doesn't happen often.
Jason Nolan was 2nd & Ger Walsh was 3rd which changes the top of the league again this year as Jason has now over taken Dermot Mitchell into 1st place, with Kevin McLaughlin & Aidan Crean just behind in 3 & 4 place respectively, with nine points up for grabs for a clean sweep in the final competition any of the anglers in 2nd 3rd & 4th place could leap into 1st place and win this years league. This is the first time the league has come down tho the aptly named "Last Chance" and with 2 experienced lake anglers within striking distance of the top things may look very different on Sunday.

The Sedge Shield

Hi All
The Sedge Shield was fished on Saturday 12th August and a plesent evening greeted the anglers who turned out for it. As Sedges buzzed around the car park a good evenings fishing was anticipated and most weren't to be disappointed.
Roy Sanderson won the Shield on the night with a fine total of 56.5 inches and had the largest fish at 16.5 inches well done Roy, Dermot Mitchell was second and Jason Nolan was 3rd. All had an enjoyable evening with the usual banter back in the car park afterwards. 2nd place puts Dermot Mitchell to the top of the league table for the first time this year hotly pursued by Kevin McLaughlin & Jason Nolan 2 points behind with Aidan Crean a further point back there are 4 anglers who could still win the league this year with just 2 competitions left this should be a good run in.
Heres some pictures taken on the night.

The Green Peter

Hi All
The green peter competition was fished this year with some success when compared to last year which was not good. Fish were caught this year Hooray! the best of which fell to Noel Fitzpatrick who won the competition on the day, well done Noel. Declan Shannen was 2nd and Brian McDonagh was 3rd. Well done to all who fished. We have no photos as yet, if anyone took any photos on the day please send them to the Leixlip anglers email & we will post them here.
As you all know the blog is a bit behind schedule (a decision taken by the comity to slow down the flow of info relating to catches on the river on social media due to increased attention the rivers was getting from poachers) with that in mind here is the first update in a while, there are 2 more to come, the Sedge Shield & the delayed Clonanav Cup which have both been fished and results will be posted over the coming days so stay tuned, the league table is at the same stage e.g green peter and will be updated in unison with the competition updates, the league which is quite tight this year with any of 6 anglers in with a chance of winning it.

The Intel Trophy

Hi All
The intel Trophy was fished on the weekend and what fabulous weather greeted the Leixlip Anglers, with anticipation of a good evenings fishing all set out for the river, many with different tactics in mind how to handle this weather, some suggesting fish early with dry flies & nymphs, some suggesting hold off till dusk & attack then with the sedge, who was correct, turns out all of them as fish were caught all through the evening & into the night.
We had a tie for first place with Dermot Mitchell & Kevin McLaughlin both catching 68 inches for their bag total, the winner was decided on count back in the end with Kevin McLaughlin winning out with his biggest fish of 15 inches trumping Dermot's biggest of 12 inches.
Sean Meila was third with 66 inches.
Well done Kevin one of very few people to win the Intel trophy in back to back years who's name isn't Brian Coffey (Ha Ha Ha) and well done to all who fished on a cracking evening and caught loads of fish, who says you can't catch in bright sunlight.
The League table is now fully up to date and is heating up nicely with 2 lake & 2 river comps still to come only one point covers the top 5 places, the next couple of competitions will prove instrumental in deciding who rises to the top.

The Festival Comp

Hi All
The festival competition was fished Friday 2nd June, our lowest ever turn out for this competition on what proved a very good nights fishing with some fine trout caught. Aidan Crean had the biggest fish on the night winning the comp with a 15.5 inch trout, a 3 way tie for 2nd with Matt Cunningham, Kevin McLaughlin & Donal Connelly all catching a trout 14 inches and Michael Callaghan third with a 13 inch trout. Well done Aidan and all who fished the comp on an interesting evening.
As good a nights fishing as it was this didn't stop the heavens opening up around 10:15 pm when the rain came down in bucket fulls forcing everyone to take cover until it stopped at 11pm conveniently just before we went to the pub.

The Hawthorn Cup

Hi All
The Hawthorn Cup was fished on Sunday and a lovely sunny morning greeted the anglers who turned out for it. With the weather not as bad as expected a nice days fishing was anticipated however nobody told the trout who were proving elusive on the day. While a good number trout were caught all anglers reported they had to work hard for them, with long walks between fish and suitable pools not to mention repeated tactic changes & fly swapping. All the walking aside the day was enjoyed by all. Jason Nolan was 1st with 9 fish for 85 inches, Eduard Dondea was 2nd with 7 fish for 76 inches Eduard also caught the biggest fish on the day a lovely 13 inch trout, Dermot Mitchell was 3rd with 8 fish for 75 inches. Well done lads on a tough day and well done to all who fished as no one returned to the car park without having caught something. It was also noted that the salmon par in the river have all turned to bars of silver and are about to head out to sea so the aggravation of endless par will be over soon, although on a really slow day sometimes their nuisance is welcome. Our resident happy snapper wasn't out with his camera (Luca) so we don't have as many pictures as usual but heres the couple below that were taken. The next com / social gathering is the new competition in memorial of our late member Jimmy Carroll RIP venue to dates and times will be sent via text, in the meantime tight lines

Paddy's Day Comp 2017

Hi All

A drizzly morning greeted the Leixlip Anglers for their first competition (social gathering) of the year. However as usual such weather would not dampen spirits nor deter us from a bit of fishing. The Rye has been fishing very well for the past couple of weeks so a good day was expected. As usual always a good turn out for the first get together of the year with over 20 anglers out for the day. A good return of fish as well with more than 50 fish over the measurable 8 inches caught and countless small trout & salmon par. The Trophy was won in the end by Eduard Dondea with a 12.5 inch trout as his biggest, Gianluca Paolella also caught a 12.5 inch trout but came 2nd on count back to Eddies next biggest fish, Dermot Mitchell was 3rd with a 12 inch trout, very well done to Eduard and all who got out for a lovely days fishing. The next comp is the Hawthorn Cup which is scheduled during April hope to see you all there. in the mean time heres a few photos to wet the appetite. Also the league table has begun for this year check out the league table page.

Pike Comp 2016

Hi All
As usual the Pike comp was fished in Carton estate many thanks to the estate management for continued support with the hosting of this event & during 2016 the hosting of the Sedge Shield, again a big thank you to the carton House management for extending this welcome to us it was very much appreciated. Also thank you to Rob Love for helping this happen as well.

The Pike comp was fished on a lovely November day with sun all day, a chilly eastern breezy kept every one awake though. Donal as usual dished up some lovely burgers & sausages at lunch time many thanks to him for his constant support. The competition was won in the end by Martin Murray who had a really good day with the toothy critters, well done Martin & all who fished on the day.

Green Peter & Last Chance

Hi All
As many of you already know we had a bit of a disaster where lake competitions were concerned last year both the Green peter & last chance competitions were cancelled due to horrid conditions.           It was hoped an opportunity to fish both comps would happen before the end of the season but the conditions twarted use at every turn, so for the first time in many years both lake comps were not fished and hence no winner a sad situation lets hope 2017 is nicer to use where lake fishing is concerned.
